Alaska's original Statehood date was January 3, 1959.
The Alaska Sate Medallion reverse design features a grizzly bear with salmon. The inscriptions include the State name, and "The Great Land." The reverse was designed by Susan Gamble.
The grizzly bear and salmon symbolize the natural beauty and wildlife which are abundant in the vast state of Alaska. More than 98% of the grizzly bear population of the United States resides in Alaska. The state was purchased from Russia in 1867 for the sum of $7.2 million. Alaska's abundant gold and oil resources made the purchase an incredible investment!
The State Medallion series is based on artwork from the US Mint which was used on the 50 State Quarter Program. The medallions will come in a two medallion set containing a quarter size (24.26mm) medallion and a 38mm medallion. There will be special state map that you can place the smaller ones in, if you so desire. The set (both medallions) will have the same tracking number so please do not release both at the same time.
