__Netsuke - Waterlilly

few words from the designer...

A series of two coins for me (possibly a third) called the “Netsuke Geocoin”. A Netsuke is a small stopper used so that you can hang a purse through your belt (or, in Japan, the obi [belt] of your kimono [wrap or robe]). The stopper prevents the purse from slipping out from under your belt. Netsuke come in a fantastical array of shapes, from simple knot-like forms to complicated, puzzle-like interwoven animal shapes. One less well-known shape is the manju, named after a type of Japanese candy. It happens to be round, and flat, not unlike a geocoin. Unlike the classical manju, though, my interpretation is a bit more oval in shape. But it is an actual functional netsuke, in that there is a hole through which you can thread a cord to make the geocoin into a stopper.

The first in the series is the Waterlily Netsuke, pictured above. This is actually the AE (15 made), in textured antique silver with transparent blue enamel over a 3D koi carp (and some other details). The regular editions will be in satin gold, satin silver, and copper (with blue water).

If the series is successful, we’ll do a third geocoin for the series -- the Cherry Blossom Netsuke. Also, the icon status for this coin also depends on the sales: if they sell very well, each coin in the series will have its own icon; otherwise they’ll have a common icon.

  • Size: 1.75" (45mm)
  • Thickness: 7.5mm
  • Editions: Satin Gold, Satin Silver, Antique Silver (AE), Copper (GCF version)

This one will be available in Antique Copper, Antique Silver, and Antique Gold and has no color on it: it’s purely an exercise in 3D and texture. The AE of that will be Antique Bronze (15 made).

__Celtic Warrior

Front

The front consist of a Celtic cross with interlaced knot work with my family crest (Rogers) imbedded in the center. Crest Description; White shield with a black chevron and three stags and a trefoil in the center. A Chevron was never given for anything but military achievement and so is accounted the most honorable of all heraldic charges. It is said to represent the roof of a house and so denotes protection. The Stagg - Skillful, Politic, lover of harmony. In Ireland the Stag was one of the most ancient of charges and was regarded as the most handsome. The Stag represents the very ancestors of the Celtic race. Trefoil/Shamrock - Perpetuity, longevity. In Ireland the Shamrock was used by Saint Patrick to explain the Holy Trinity and thus has Christian significance.

Back

A compass rose with the map of the Celtic nations laid over top with the symbol of the United Celtic Nations on the left and right sides. The Celtic nations are territories in North-West Europe in which that area's own Celtic languages and cultural traits have survived. The term "nation" is used in this context to mean a generally defined region that is associated with a common identity, language or culture. It is not synonymous with "sovereign state", but rather with traditional territories or "countries". The six territories recognized as "Celtic" nations are Brittany (Breizh), Cornwall (Kernow), Ireland (Éire), the Isle of Man (Mannin), Scotland (Alba), and Wales (Cymru). “United Celtic Nations” Symbol is made of a green field charged with two yellow interlaced triskells, the first of them symbolizing the Gaelic countries (Scotland, Man, Ireland) and the second of them symbolizing the Brittonic countries (Wales, Cornwall, Brittany). Each of the six nations is therefore symbolized by a branch of the triskells. The triskells are inscribed in a yellow Celtic circle, which has been used by the Celts as a rallying sign since the beginning of the century. Green symbolizes both fredoom and the sea which links the Celtic countries. The motto along the bottom is. "Y Ddraig Goch Ddyry Cychwyn” or “the Red Dragon inspires action”! The dragon has been a universal creature of myth and legend for centuries. The fabled creature plays a significant role in the lives of the Celts. It’s associated with fire, air, earth and water, the four elements.

__ Celtic Turtle

A few notes from the Celtic Turtle:

In Celtic legends there are many instances where Celts have had animal allies or helpers when they have gone on a journey. It is said that you would know which animal has chosen you by seeing them more than three times on that journey. From those ancient legends many clans have adopted those diverse creatures and have put them on banners to fly for inspiration when going to war. The banner that I fly is the Turtle. It is Patient, wise, and is protected where ever it goes. The Turtle is also known to have a special connection to the Earth and other things in nature. The Celtic knot on the front of the turtle is known as the friendship knot and the one on the back represents the members of my family and their connection.

A Chris Mackey tribute to all those folks that just can't seem to read a tracking number. It's mostly our fault, since we just keep squeezing them in smaller and smaller. So you have to test out that magnifying glass as often as possible. Not much trouble reading the tracking code here, but the detail surrounding is still as intricate as Mackey could create.
