_Lotus Geocoin - "Meh" Edition

Jackalgirl says:

Well, well, well. I've got to add another chapter to the annals of "Trials & Tribulations of Coin Design, Quarterly".

So I get this box, right? Awesome! They're here! So excited! Then I open it up. URRRRRR??!??!?

Feast Your Eyes

I don't blame Direct Mint; I know that Pete & the Gang sent my blueprints. And although I understand that there was some confusion (the mint themselves made several versions to test out options), even with that in mind, I'd only expect (say) them to mistakenly fill the back with trans #10 (since that was one of the options). But to fill the whole back with trans #10 and no other colors, and the whole front with wipe with no other enamels, when my blueprint is pretty clear about the blues & greens and glitters that go in there? Oy!

Well, Pete, being the gracious guy and extremely good business person that he is, is having the coins remade. And he's giving me these pieces of...coin. So, in the interests of collectibility and, I suppose, a very dark (wiped?) sense of humor, I'm going to sell these directly.

Those of you interested in Egyptian Mythology are probably familiar with the Ogdoad of Hermopolis, eight deities that were worshipped during the Old Kingdom but were eventually supplanted by the later, more familiar gods. One of these was "Heh", whose hieroglyphic name still survives as the symbol representing the number "one million" (so Heh is often known as "god of a million years").

So, with all of this in mind, I am calling this edition the "Meh Edition", in honor of Meh, "the God of Mediocre Work Ethics", also known as "the God of a Million Workers with Inconsistent Quality Control" and the most favorite Old Kingdom epithet of all: "the God of 'Bob Told Me to Use Wipe--No Time to Look at the Blueprint, it's Almost Lunch!'". These coins will be fully trackable on geocaching.com and share the Lotus Compass' unique icon.

This was meant to be the Anubis Artist's Edition, but the mint really messed up on it. No colors, no glitters, just transparent #10 (not asked for) all over one side, and black wipe (asked for, but just in the background) all over the other! Yes, it surely is work inspired by Meh, the God of Indifferent Quality Control!

There are only 36 of these coins, total (34 being made available) and they will NEVER be reminted, so they are almost assuredly XLE. If you're a die-hard collector, or if you just have a really weird sense of humor, this edition is for you! The coins will come with numbered slips. If you would like a number, make sure you add a note to your order letting me know at a minimum your top three choices for numbers (1 and 2 are already taken). I will do my best to oblige you, but please bear in mind that if your numbers are already chosen, I'll be sending you a random number. If you have problems appending a note, just drop me an email (webmaster@grafikato.com) and include your order number.

__Clay TikiCoin 4

A hand-made trackable geocoin produced in a very limited edition of 100 coins

What does the face on this ancient coin represent? Dr. Smiddly, the explorer who discovered the coins deep in the Valley Of Lost Caches, is at a loss. “it is such a curious expression,” explained Smiddly, “but I’m sad to say we have no idea what it means.”

Clay TikiCoin #4 has been meticulously hand pressed and glazed in my Kailua studio, working from a mold of my original clay sculpture. Like all things handcrafted, no two are exactly alike - so the coin you receive will vary slightly from the photograph. Measuring approximately 2 1/8 inches in diameter, each coin is stamped on the back with a unique tracking number for use with the geocaching.com website. In addition, TikiCoin #4 comes with a pathtag replica of its unique geocaching.com icon!

Clay TikiCoin #4 is part of a set of 4 trackable Clay TikiCoin designs (100 coins were pressed of each design - 400 total). Be sure to take a look at Clay TikiCoin #1, #2, and #3 as well.

About Shipping Costs: TikiCoin shipping is $9 for first coin, $1 each additional coin. The coins are unique and irreplaceable, and we don’t want them to be lost or damaged on the way to their new homes. Therefore we will only ship the coins well padded in a small USPS Priority Mail flat rate box fully insured with Signature Confirmation.

Please feel free to convo me with any questions -

__Clay TikiCoin 3

A hand-made trackable geocoin produced in a very limited edition of 100 coins

What does the face on this ancient coin represent? Dr. Elisabeth Latch, a history professor at the VanTiki University, has a theory. “TikiCoin #1 and #3,” she explained via telegraph, “represent the light and dark of cache hunting. Coin #1 is filled with joy - the experience of hunting for a cache in nature with friends is all that matters. Coin #3, on the other hand, is focused entirely on the hunt. This focus has taken all the joy out of caching, and you can see the anger in the coin’s face.”

Clay TikiCoin #3 has been meticulously hand pressed and glazed in my Kailua studio, working from a mold of my original clay sculpture. __Clay TikiCoin 2

A hand-made trackable geocoin produced in a very limited edition of 100 coins

What does the face on this ancient coin represent? Dr. Smiddly, the explorer who discovered the coins deep in the Valley Of Lost Caches, has a theory. “The coin is heavily patterned with stylized camouflage, and is animalistic in appearance,” Smiddly postulates, “I believe this coin is an anthropomorphic representation of the cache itself. A living, breathing geocache spirit - hiding deep in the jungle and waiting to be discovered.”

Clay TikiCoin #2 has been meticulously hand pressed and glazed in my Kailua studio, working from a mold of my original clay sculpture. Like all things handcrafted, no two are exactly alike - so the coin you receive will vary slightly from the photograph.

BLAU: Genauigkeit, Konzentration
GELB: Optimismus
GRÜN: Natur
ORANGE: Energie

__Ancient Airplane . . . Antique Silver

Product Information

No one really knows what this was supposed to represent. Some suspected it represented an insect. Others think it represented some type of bird. The dreamers have wondered if it was a sign of ancient alien visitors or that perhaps man had figured out how to fly. We wonder if maybe it was some type of good luck charm. Maybe you will be the one to figure it out. We are not sure, but confess that on this one we are not in the dreamers category. However, when we spotted this design we did dream of making it into a geocoin. Each "coin" comes in an attractive gift box. Here is the link that inspired this coin.

__Lotus Compass - Osiris

Dimensions2.00"

Thickness5.0 mm

FinishSatin Gold

EnamelingTranslucent

Trackable?Yes

Has IconYes

Flavor Text from the artist, Jackalgirl:

The inspiration for this coin comes from the glorious Middle- and New Kingdoms of Ancient Egypt. Lotus buds and flowers (Nymphaea caerulea), symbols of creation & rebirth, are used to create a compass rose around the central disk of the sun. The directions are represented in four forms of text: hieroglyphs, Gardnerian transliteration, English, and an approximation of how the word might be pronounced (based on the study of both Middle Egyptian and its still-extant descendant, Coptic). South is at the top, as it was represented in Egyptian art (and, in fact, the Egyptian word for "south" also means "up").

On the reverse, the classic representation of Aten (the sun disk, represented in the way made very famous by the artisans of the Amarna period) is, of course, geocaching, as any self-respecting sun deity with eons of time on its many, many hands would probably be doing. Aten has found an ammo can and is signing the log and -- what's that? A bug is escaping!

This coin was initially released in five versions:
Aten - classic Egyptian colors with gold plating
Set - copper plating done up primarily in shades of red, Set's color
Osiris - greens and blacks, representing the lush growth of life in the rich soil of the Nile Valley, on gold.
Nepthys - silver plating with blues and purples
Anubis - the Artist Edition, in satin gold with enamel wash in black and highlights in blues and greens.
